  • Overview

    The Director of Community Initiatives is responsible for building and managing a comprehensive strategy for addressing the social determinants of health through impactful community partnerships and policy change.


    The Director oversees corporate social responsibility activities including the sponsorships and memberships program; managing relationships and programs related to civic engagement, external affairs, and policy, systems, and environment change; and utilizes innovative and culturally-responsive methods for documentation and evaluation.


    The Director is responsible for networking and representing Fairview in community settings in order to keep abreast of emerging community issues, strengthen community relationships, and link individuals and organizations with Fairview to help create optimal health and well-being for our communities.


    The Director provides direction and support to staff and programming, with a lens focused on improving health equity through addressing the social determinants of health.



    • Serves in a leadership role to coordinate and manage corporate social responsibility and community relations activities for Fairview.
    • Leverages policy and systems change opportunities to improve community health through legislative and community change efforts, working with internal and external partners to advance relevant policy issues and Fairview position in line with Anchor Institution mission.
    • Represents Fairview in a variety of community venues and serves on community committees/boards to develop strategic relationships and keep abreast of emerging community issues. Responsible for understanding community groups and linking appropriate community organizations with Fairview.
    • Oversees the Fairview sponsorships process for developing, implementing, and managing charitable contributions, including communication across Fairview and with the external requestors. Develops and monitors contributions budget. Partners with Brands, Marketing, and Communications to ensure consistent messaging and strategic organizational alignment.
    • Develops and manages strategic engagement with community organizations by matching Fairview leaders to appropriate community opportunities. Consistently assesses the relationship impact of these relationships to ensure right fit for Fairview and relevancy to the needs of the community and health system. Oversees a training and reporting program to support Fairview leaders and to produce impact evaluation.
    • Develop a framework and process for system engagement with community leadership and civic engagement in support of a policy and systems agenda to increase health equity and address the social determinants of health.
    • Liaise with Fairview Brands, Communications, and Marketing staff to support internal employee and external community relations, PR, and communications
    • Partners to support the Fairview Employee Volunteer Program. Identifies volunteer opportunities in alignment with system priorities and existing community relationships. Provides effective communication and feedback methods to measure volunteer experience and community experience.
    • Collaborates across Fairview on committees as a Community Advancement representative, partnering to develop strategic partnerships which link Fairview to the community and ensure integration with Community Advancement objectives.
    • Partners with Philanthropy team to help identify and cultivate philanthropic funding opportunities and partnerships.


    Required Education

    • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of equivalent education and experience required

    Required Experience

    • Minimum 7 years of experience with community change initiatives, organizing, and coalition management
    • Demonstrated community relations and community engagement experience
    • Ability to develop a network of relationships with diverse populations and work across race, class, sector, and geography
    • Keen understanding of the sociopolitical environment in Minnesota
    • Excellent organization and attention to detail
    • Excellent communication skills
    • High level of initiative
    • Extensive experience and relationships in the Twin Cities Metro Area as well as exposure to Greater Minnesota communities
    • Recent collaborative experience within the last five years with a community change or organizing effort
    • Socially entrepreneurial, inventive 

    Preferred Experience

    • Demonstrated experience identifying potential funders, and raising and allocating money for community engagement
    • Experience supervising others
    • Experience in a large, complex organization
